the
churning
belly
The churning belly is a large-scale prototype musical sculpture designed as part of a collaboration with an EYFS teachers and their class, thinking around collective and embodied musicing as an aid to learning.
The design followed the EYFS and KS1 curriculum in it's conception, describing different functions of the human body through sounds, with each musical model (for which churning belly is 1 of 4) correlating musically to the next.
This project came about as a way to think about how cultural hegemonies are materialised early on through schooling systems, media and play. This project looked at music as a mode to explore collaborative ways of learning and playing, that aren’t predicated on competition or ranking.
